If you can’t make it for the week, take a day trip this summer to the family-friendly, internationally renowned Listowel Writers’ Week. The bustling heritage town draws Irish and international writers and celebrities together at the begining of June each year to present a world-class programme of readings, interviews and debates, as well as art exhibitions, theatre, pub trails, tours and guided walks.
This unique festival, which celebrates its 45th year in June 2016 is the birthplace of many of Ireland’s prominent writers past and present including John B Keane, famous for The Field and Big Maggie, and Maurice Walsh of The Quiet Man – Hollywood blockbuster of the 1950s.
Whichever day you decide to visit there will be a packed programme of events to choose from. Many of the events are free but for those that are not you can also purchase single tickets, or avail of a daily festival pass.
Meet your favourite author and get a personal signed copy of their latest book (and maybe even a photo!) Or you may wish to attend one of our stimulating and thought-provoking interviews or debates, some of which are televised and panelled by well-known Irish and international writers and celebrities.
There’s something for every member of the family as we also have a packed children’s and young adult programme to keep the younger ones stimulated and amused.
And don’t forget, Listowel is just a 15 minute drive from the beautiful seaside town of Ballybunion on the Wild Atlantic Way, where you can stroll on the magnificent cliffs or take a plunge in its famous Seaweed Baths. Or if walking is not your thing, you might prefer to take a half-day Historical Bus Tour with stop-off points for refreshments at places of cultural and historical interest.
Before you venture home, you should call into the famous John B Keane’s Pub (still run by the Keane family) and rub shoulders with the likes of Anne Enright or Graham Norton. You just never know who you will bump into on a day-trip to Listowel!
One thing is certain, you will come away from your visit with a lasting sense of the famous Magic that is Listowel Writers’ Week.
