Travel Writing
Biog:
Manchán is a writer and documentary maker. His travel programmes for TG4 explored remote cultures. No Béarla, his documentary series about travelling around Ireland speaking only Irish sparked international debate. He has written 6 books in English and Irish including Angels & Rabies and Truck Fever. His Play Broken Croí/Heart Briste won the Parker Trust Irish language drama award. His first novel Oddballs: A novel of affections, was published in Sept 2010. He writes the Magan’s World column for the Irish Times, and has written for the Guardian, LA Times and Washington Post.
Course Theme:
This workshop aims to rescue travel writing from the grips of aggrandising frozen-beard-types, smug xenophobes and dreary day-trippers. Participants will learn how to structure absorbing sentences and meld anecdote, insight and a sense of place into timeless pieces of writing that might interest travel editors, or inspire other travellers. The focus will be on capturing the essence of a culture by transforming the sights, sounds and soul of a place into entertaining, engaging prose, whether personal memoir, blogs or travel articles. Manchán Magan passionately believes in travel writing as the perfect combination of memoir, history, anthropology, geography and adventure story.
