Experience Overview

Perhaps you are a novice writer? Maybe you have written the first draft of your novel? Do you love to write poetry but are mystified by its technicalities? Maybe travel writing or memoir is more your thing? Regardless of what writing route you are taking or your level of expertise, we have a workshop to suit your personal requirements.

Join us in the true home of the Creative Writing Workshop this summer and immerse yourself in the rich literary tradition of Listowel Writers’ Week. Listowel is also the birthplace of many of Ireland’s most prominent writers including John B Keane, Bryan MacMahon and Maurice Walsh. Introduced into Ireland by Bryan MacMahon back in 1971, our workshops are now attended by participants from all over the world and directed by world-renowned Irish and international writers such as Roddy Doyle and Douglas Kennedy.

As our workshops take place over 1, 2 and 3 consecutive mornings of Listowel Writers’ Week Literary Festival, you can choose to take time out in the afternoons and evenings for some quiet reflection (or writing).

Listowel is a picturesque, bustling market town with plenty of cultural and literary sites to visit, including John B Keane’s Pub (still run by the Keane family) and where you could easily find yourself sharing a table with the likes of Anne Enright or Colm Tóibín.

Or you may decide to immerse yourself in our busy programme of readings, lectures, forums, theatre and art exhibitions. Whatever you decide, you are guaranteed to meet new people and make new friends. Lorraine Griffin, a previous workshop participant said recently: ‘It’s a great way to meet people. Having travelled solo to my first Listowel Writers’ Week it was fantastic to have a group of classmates for coffee or lunch. I made a friend for life my first time at Listowel and we’ve come back here together in the years since. It really is a special week.’
