PROGRAMME CURATOR FOR LISTOWEL WRITERS’ WEEK 2023 (contract for services)

The Board of Listowel Writers’ Week wishes to engage the services of a programme curator, on a contract for services basis, to devise a literary programme of quality, ambition, and diversity for our 2023 festival which takes place from 31.05.2023- 04.06.2023

Service specification:

This is a freelance curatorial role which will involve liaising closely with our professional Management Team to:

  • Propose a theme and core programme elements for the 2023 festival and identify writers who will give voice and presence to this theme at Listowel Writers’ Week 2023.
  • Propose a programme of events that will feature established and emerging writers of both national and international reputations, who will engage with the convivial festival format that is a core part of the character of Listowel Writers’ Week.
  • Propose a theme and programme of events for the Children’s Literary Festival which takes place within the main festival.
  • Propose clear programme strands that are designed to attract and include a diverse mix of writers, readers, and audiences across all age groups and literary genres.
  • Support the Management Team in identifying and matching writers with specific types of events such as public readings, public interviews, panel discussions, talks, workshops, and other events.
  • Be available to represent the 2023 festival programme as part of Listowel Writers’ Week’s communications plan for the 2023 festival.
  • Present the main programme elements – the backbone of the 2023 festival – to the Board no later than 12.00 noon on Thursday 15th December 2022.
  • Present a full, detailed programme proposal for the 2023 festival to the Board no later than 12.00 noon on Wednesday 15th February 2023.

Contract for services basis, budget

Listowel Writers’ Week wishes to engage the services of a programme curator for the 2023 festival on a contract for services basis and proposals are invited on this.  It will be the responsibility of the curator to manage their own tax affairs. The maximum budget available for this contract for services is €20,000 which includes VAT if applicable.

About Listowel Writers’ Week (LWW):

The first Listowel Writers’ Week festival took place in 1971 and has played a formative role in the development of literary festivals and events in Ireland. LWW supports writers by celebrating writing and reading, by providing opportunities for writers to meet with peers, creating opportunities for writers to read and present their work to audiences, stimulating and encouraging people to engage with writing and reading, and by celebrating the unique literary heritage of Listowel in a broader national and international context.

Our 2023 festival takes place in Listowel from 31.05.2023 – 04.06.2023.

Listowel Writers’ Week is incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee, is governed by a board of Directors, and is managed by a team of professional staff.

LWW appreciates the continued funding and support that it receives from An Chomhairle Ealaíon/Arts Council, Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland.

Our festival format includes the following elements:

    • Interview / Discussions with Writers (fiction/ non-fiction/ poetry/ emerging & debut writers/ current affairs / wellbeing / genre fiction / young adult & children.
    • Workshops
  • Book Launches
  • Literary Trail/Walks/Tour
  • Poetry Corners & ‘Open Mic’ Poetry events

To make a proposal:

Please write to us outlining

  • Your background and experience in literary programming, and in working with festivals & events.
  • Details of your ideas and your approach to programming LWW 2023, including examples of writers, genres, styles, and perspectives that you feel will enrich our festival; please also say something about the type of events and settings you propose for LWW 2023.
  • Your CV and please make sure to include examples of your experience in working with writers and/or festivals & events.
  • Details of two literature-based events or projects for which you have been responsible, and contact details for the principals involved if we need to contact them.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is 5 pm on Monday, October 10th 2022.
