Willie Redmond – Thursday 29th May 12 noon, The Seanchaí Centre
Originally from Edenderry, Co Offaly, artist Willie Redmond grew up surrounded by and working on the bog. Now based in Dublin, he specialises in acrylics, oils, pastels and mixed medium. His current exhibition Turf & Surf deals with its subjects in a narrative style. The panels are divided into various weights depicting mood, texture, movement, detail, compositions, lines and rhythms, and combined to produce a rhapsody-style narrative. His unique and highly engaging solo shows have been exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and the UK. www.willieredmond.com
Gemma Billington – Thursday 29th May 4.00pm St John’s Theatre
Gemma Billington was born in Killorglin, Co Kerry and went to England in her early twenties. She studied Sculpture at Newbury College of Art and did a BA Honours degree at Winchester School of Art. She now lives and works between her studio in Glencar, Co. Kerry and Berkshire. England. The works of Turner, Jack B Yeats, Matisse and present day contemporary artist Hughie O’Donoghue are Gemma’s influences, although having said that her main inspiration comes from nature and its ever changing patterns and atmosphere.
She becomes particularly absorbed in the deathlessness and timelessness of nature, intensified by her looking at the eternity of nature through the flower. She chooses not to use the traditional brush strokes but other means of applying the paint – almost like a dance; raw vibrant colours and immediacy of illustrative mark-making. The more one looks at these paintings the more they will be drawn into the paint, but mostly to their meaning: Eternity.
