We will sing farewell to Listowel Writers’ Week 2026 with a rousing and heartfelt tribute to entertainer, songwriter and journalist Mickey MacConnell. A native of Ballanaleck, Co Fermanagh, Mickey became an adopted Kerryman when he moved to Listowel with his beloved wife Maura and daughters Kerry and Claire.
Mickey is best known for lyrical, iconic songs such as ‘Only Our Rivers Run Free’, The Man who Drank the Farm, Supermarket Wine and the world famous The Lidl and Aldi Song and many many more.
His songs have been recorded by Christy Moore, Liam Clancy, The Wolfe Tones, Planxty, Onóir and numerous others.
